Behind the Uniform and the Record: Why Your Past Is Not Your Final Audit

If you haven’t yet, check out my featured story on Influential Women, “From Maximum Security to Top Secret,” where I share how I transitioned from the cellblock to holding a Top Secret clearance with the U.S. Air Force.

When that Influential Women piece went live, it sparked a wave of messages from readers, veterans, single mothers, and entrepreneurs. People wanted to know the logistics: How do you get a Top Secret clearance with a felony on your record? How do you walk into high-security rooms when your past paper trail screams "liability"?

The technical answer involves a meticulous investigative process, radical transparency, and years of proven integrity. But the spiritual and mental answer goes much deeper than government paperwork. Here is what I want to expand on for our community here at Holy No: How to pass the internal audit before anyone else ever reviews your file.

The Danger of Living on the Defensive

When you spend your formative years navigating trauma, addiction, or institutional containment, your nervous system learns to live in a state of permanent defense. You anticipate the shoe dropping. You expect the background check to fail. You learn to carry a quiet, gnawing shame—as if your past is a flashing neon sign that disqualifies you from stepping into authority.

For a long time, I let the "FELON" label dictate the perimeter of my life. Even after earning my degrees, building a career, and stepping into government service, that lingering panic tried to sit in the driver's seat.

It wasn't until I stopped trying to hide my story and started taking absolute, unapologetic ownership of it that everything shifted.

Why the Investigators Didn't Disqualify Me

When federal investigators reviewed my background, they weren't looking for a pristine life—because no such thing exists. They were looking for character under fire.

When asked about my past choices, I didn't offer excuses, spin narratives, or play the victim. I looked them in the eye and stated the plain truth: That’s all I knew, I wanted out, and I built a way out.

Investigators respect truth because truth is rare. Human systems can change their minds, titles come and go, and background checks will always have a paper trail—but an unshakeable inner alignment? That cannot be audited, revoked, or denied.

Shifting to UNSHACKLED Level 7

Getting the clearance was a massive milestone, but it wasn't my ultimate victory. My biggest flex isn't a government badge—it’s the divine, unyielding peace of being able to look back at my past without a single ounce of shame.

If you are running your business, raising your family, or trying to rebuild your career while constantly looking over your shoulder, I want to challenge you to shift your posture:

  1. Stop apologizing for the furnace. Your rock bottom wasn’t a permanent burial site; it was a foundational forge. The pressure you survived created the grit you now use to lead.

  2. Audit your internal narrative. Are you still speaking to yourself like an inmate, or are you speaking like an architect? Stop waiting for human systems to validate your worth.

  3. Guard your perimeter. True freedom isn't about what external authorities grant you—it’s about refusing to let the noise of your past dictate your future impact.

You Didn’t Survive to Blend In

The enemy of your multi-generational restoration wants nothing more than for you to keep your head down and stay quiet. He wants you to feel disqualified so you never build the very things you were born to create.

I didn't make it out of the maximum-security fire just to blend back into the crowd. And neither did you.

Head over to read the full feature on Influential Women to see the timeline of how the breakthrough happened—and then drop anchor right here. We aren't just surviving anymore. We are stepping into Level 7
