Signs You Are Interfering with God’s Refining Fire (and How to Stop Enabling)
We call it "helping." We call it "saving them." But out on the battlefield of spiritual warfare, human strength is a liability. When we constantly rush in to absorb the impact of our loved ones' destructive choices, we aren't protecting them from the enemy—we are actually shielding them from the very pressure God designed to break their chains.
When you step in to constantly "save" your loved one from the consequences of their choices, you are interfering with God's refining fire.
How do you know if you’ve crossed the line from a supportive intercessor to an enabler? Look for these three tactical signs:
Sign 1: You Are Cleaning Up Wreckage They Caused
If you are paying the debts, covering the rent, lying to employers, or fixing the legal disasters they manufactured while operating under a destructive influence, you are absorbing the heat. To the natural world, a son sitting in a jail cell looks like total defeat. But to a watchman mother, it can be God answering a cry, stepping in to cover them when they can’t cover themselves. The jail cell forces a divine timeout. If you pay the bail, you interrupt the rescue.
Sign 2: Your Boundaries Have an Expiration Date
If you set a rule at 9:00 PM but dissolve into tears and break it by 3:00 AM because the manipulation got too loud, your parameters have no weight. When dealing with someone operating under demonic influence, the enemy will test your resolve. If you break your line even once, they will realize your word has no authority, and they will forever violate your perimeter.
Sign 3: You Are Managing a Ghost
Are you trying to build a future, a schedule, or a rehab plan with someone who is completely lost to a chemical demon? If you are doing all the calling, all the planning, and all the desperate heavy lifting while they remain passive or resistant, you are fighting a natural battle. You cannot negotiate with a typhoon.
How to Stop Enforcing the Enemy's Loop
You have to step back and trust the fire. When I refused to bail my son out of jail, it wasn’t because I stopped loving him. It was because I knew that jail cell was the only thing keeping him alive while the demon was distracted by me. I had to leave him entirely in the hands of God’s mercy.
Let the weight of the system anchor them so they don’t drift back into the abyss. Step off the tracks and let God operate.
